DPS vs Domain Authority: Why One Measures a Page and the Other Measures a Business
Published Oct 27, 2026 · 6 min read
Domain Authority is a prediction. Digital Presence Score is a measurement. That is the whole difference, and it matters more than it sounds.

What Domain Authority is
Domain Authority was built by Moz in 2012 as a modeled estimate of how a page is likely to rank in Google’s organic results. It is calculated primarily from the link graph: who links to you, how many, from where, and how strong those sources are. It is a 0–100 number scaled logarithmically. Going from 20 to 30 is much easier than going from 60 to 70. It is not a Google metric; Google has never used it or endorsed it. It is a vendor-built proxy for a Google outcome.
Three things to know about it:
- It is predictive, not diagnostic. It tells you a probability about a future ranking. It does not tell you what to fix on the page in front of you.
- It is Google-centric. It models one search engine’s historical behavior on an open-web corpus of links.
- It is page-grained in theory, business-grained in practice. People quote the domain’s DA as if it describes the business. What it describes is the link graph into the domain.
For the decade it was the industry benchmark, that was enough. The dominant discovery surface was Google’s organic results, the dominant signal was links, and a modeled proxy for “will this page rank” was most of the useful information.
Discovery stopped being a search index
A buyer looking for a local service business today does one of several things, and only one of them is a Google query. They ask ChatGPT. They ask Perplexity. They look at the AI Overviews above the organic results. They ask Claude. They ask Gemini on the Google surface itself. They look at a map pack. They scroll a directory. They read a review site.
A score that models one of those surfaces is not useful for the other six. A link-weighted prediction of a Google ranking tells you nothing about whether ChatGPT knows your business exists. The same page can score 65 on Domain Authority and be entirely absent from an answer engine’s response, because the information the answer engine needed to quote isn’t on the page in a form it can read.
What Digital Presence Score is
Digital Presence Score is a measurement, not a prediction. It scores a business, not a page, against the signals that control whether the full stack of discovery surfaces (search index, answer engines, map packs, directories, review sites) can find and name that business.
The signals it measures:
- Crawler access. Can the systems that build the shortlist actually read your site? Googlebot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended.
- On-page legibility. Is the business’s information in the HTML before JavaScript runs?
- Lift-able answers. Does the site contain sentences a model can quote into an answer, or does it only contain marketing copy that can’t be pulled whole?
- Structured data. LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage.
- Named presence in sources the models trust. Directories, review sites, local-paper mentions, trade-association rosters.
- Review signal. Real volume on the review surfaces that feed the map pack and the models.
Each signal is observed, scored, and tracked week over week. The score going up means a specific thing was fixed and stayed fixed. The score going down means a specific thing broke.
The question each one actually answers
Domain Authority answers one question: how is my page likely to rank in Google. Useful if that is the question you have.
Digital Presence Score answers a different question: can the systems a buyer actually uses find my business and name it. The question most local service businesses have, framed in a way that is actually fixable.
A Domain Authority of 42 is a vendor’s number. A Digital Presence Score of 42 is a punch list: here are the signals that are below floor, here are the fixes, here are the owners, here is the delta next week. One is for comparing yourself to competitors on a page nobody reads. The other is for shipping work.
NoCode Labs built DPS because its clients weren’t being hired through Google alone, and because the number they’d been handed by the SEO industry for a decade had stopped describing their business. The pillar at /what-is-dps walks through how DPS is calculated. The pillar at /what-is-aeo walks through why answer engines made the measurement necessary.
Domain Authority is still an interesting number if you care about one search engine’s modeled ranking. Digital Presence Score is a measurement of whether a business exists to the systems that find it.
